Picture of lathe turned candlestick

This candlestick was one of my first projects on my JET JWL1236 lathe.  It is approximately 3 1/2 inches in diameter at the base and 13 1/4 inches tall.  I turned the outside on the lathe and drilled the candle hole on my drill press with a step bit that has been shortened with a grinder.  The black walnut spindle had some cracks and grain imperfections that I think add a lot of character in the finished piece.  I finish sanded down to 1200 grit paper and applied two coats of high gloss tung oil.  Click on the image to see it in higher resolution.

These candle holders were made out of a thick piece of cocobolo.  All pieces were drawn out, cut out with a scroll saw, and sanded on a vertical belt sander.  Then the round bases were routed with a 3/8" radius beading bit.

The top pieces were traced from a French curve, and the base outlines were drawn with a drafting compass.  each top is held to its base by three counter-bored wood screws.

Napkin Ring Set

Within the pages of Better Homes and Gardens® Wood Scrollsaw Techniques and Projects You Can Make reside several nice designs for napkin rings.  These rings are made of black walnut between two pieces of birch.   I printed my AutoCAD® drawing of the napkin ring design, glued it to a piece of acrylic, drilled a small center hole for marking center, and sanded down the outside on my belt sander to make the template.  I used a forstner bit to drill the center holes prior to cutting out the pieces on the scroll saw.  I built a simple box joint storage box out of black walnut and applied high gloss tung oil to the rings and the box.
